I have taken the Medical Letter for over 50 years. I started reading it in pharmacy school back in 1972. It is one of the best medical resources that I read and gain knowledge. I love that it is completely unbiased with no advertising from Big Pharma. All of the articles are well thought out.

I look forward to getting my copy every month. I have learned so much from reading your articles. I use the CE tests for continuing education requirement for the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

The Medical Letter is one of my favorite medical information sources that I have used now for 47 years. I look forward to receiving my copy every 2 weeks. A professor in pharmacy school introduced me this great periodical and suggested I should get a subscription. I followed his advice and I have a faithful subscriber for 47 years. The articles are always pertinent and provide me with up to date medical information that I can use in my practice. 3. I am able to obtain excellent reliable information about the newest drugs and also Medical Letter always comments on whether the drug is actually new or whether there is actual benefit over older cheaper drugs.
4. I can caution patients who get advertisements or hype from drug companies or word of mouth wonder-drug information from friends.

The Medical Letter is my most trusted source of unbiased information about the medications I use in my practice. I always feel completely comfortable knowing that the (very fair) price of subscription will be rewarded with facts and analysis and nothing else. There is no advertising, no conflict of interest, and blessedly—no political posturing. I am always grateful for the mini editorial at the end of each monograph that gives me the lowdown about whether or not this drug will be worth using or whether it is limited in effect or overly expensive. Refreshing!

Since I was a first year medical student, I have been angered by drug company advertising cluttering medical journals, often misleading, obviously costly, and shown to be effective in influencing physicians not necessarily optimal prescribing and decision-making practices. The Medical Letter has been my favored resource not only because of freedom from drug company influence, but equally because of consistent, well organized, concise, comprehensive, up to date, and accurate information, always concluded with specific evidence-based recommendations on what to do. In my opinion it should be part of the regular reading for every practitioner, medical educator, and medical student.  Less

Have had subscription since 1st year medical school in 1971... one of the very best medical publications, second to none. No other publication keeps one current on medications and also very important there evidence based and also effective off label use.

I try to 'force' it on all the medical students I teach as unfortunately their learning is now focused on programmed offerings and not the medical journals or Medical Letter and researching clinical problems in PubMed. I find this really limits their scope of knowledge in Medicine, programmed learning materials are limited, not really current and often biased. Of course they have now based examinations for advancement entirely on these and are big revenue generators so are hard to thwart. The Medical Letter needs to become forceful and push to be part of all medical student/resident education programs, the medical students I teach (in 3rd-4th years) have never heard of it.

Keep up your good standards--succinct, pertinent, topical and cost of drug revelations.

Your publication should be made mandatory for all medical students and beyond for life.  Less

I wrote a similar note to the Medical Letter about a year ago, but am compelled to send another. I have subscribed to the Medical Letter since the early 1970's, either personal subscription or as director of two statewide drug information centers. Your publication has continued to provide unbiased, clinically relevant information on drugs and therapeutics not available from any source I'm aware of. You are such a welcome, refreshing, and needed source in the continual face of biased approaches of pharmaceutical companies only for financial gain, without any real concern for care of individual patients. YOU have genuine concern for patient care.

So just want to say congratulations again to your great publication. Please keep the unbiased slant strong. It remains sorely needed.  Less

It gives a very useful summary of the approach to drug therapy of COPD. Instead of emphasizing details about each drug, it provides an overview of how drugs are employed in therapy. Firstly, I have confidence in your recommendations. Secondly, I like that you mention specifically which medications are approved (or not) in Canada. I usually save every Medical Letter anyway, because many medications first approved in the US do eventually come to Canada.  Less

As director of two large drug information centers over the years, I have relied on The Medical Letter continuously for unbiased information which simply can't be found in any other single source. I have been a subscriber of The Medical Letter since the early 1970's and have taught pharmacy and medical students the value of your publication.

You have done a remarkable job in presenting drug and therapeutic information to health professionals, cutting through the biased data provided by the drug companies, which has now extended to TV commercials. My quest over the years has been to provide unbiased information to physicians and other health professionals based on critical evaluation of clinical studies and other medical literature, much in the form of your publication. This has included comparative efficacy and safety of pharmacologic agents in specific disease states. None of this information is available through drug manufacturers. All we see is manufacturer Package Inserts and Product Information, carefully worded so as not to show any disadvantage of their product and to cover the legal side. This is a disservice to health care.

Drug information systems, including those I have developed, are available as an alternative to manufacturer data for clinicians. Many have had the original intent of providing critically evaluated information with high clinical relevance, but have succumbed to the business world, where monetary concerns prevail and there is no real understanding of the need for such information and/or fear of drug-company repercussions. Manufacturer product information often supersedes information that is really needed for the practitioner. For example, it is rare to see a dose of a drug that differs from the Package Insert, despite clear evidence of a better dose from a well-designed clinical trial.

Clinical recommendations based on critically evaluated data is essential to improve patient care. But efforts to do this other than The Medical Letter are still struggling. So I applaud your accomplishments over the years. There at least remains one place where health professionals can obtain quality, evaluated, and unbiased data. Please keep up the great work and don't "hold back" on your critical evaluations. Keep telling it like it should be told.  Less
